2025 New Refrigerants | R-454B Safety

Refrigerants in the A2L class are considered “mildly flammable” but no more dangerous than many other household products. An A2L refrigerant is safe when handled properly and when best practices and safety guidelines are applied. As part of the HVAC industry transition, Low Global Warming Potential (GWP) systems, which utilize A2L refrigerants, require sensors and safety protocol in the event of a leak. Allied Air products have additional safety features such as a Refrigerant Detection System that will reduce its concentration in the event of a leak occurring.

Refrigerant Detection System

  • Current refrigerant (R-410A) belongs to A1 category

  • Lower GWP refrigerants tend to be more flammable

  • R-410A = 2088 GWP (50% R32 / 50% R-125)

  • R-454B = 466 GWP (69% R32 / 31% R-1234yf)

  • R-454B - 78% GWP reduction vs. R-410A

  • A2L – nowhere near the flammability as A3 refrigerant i.e., Isobutane, Propane
